University of Sydney President Mark Scott Visits Fudan University to Discuss Deepening Strategic Cooperation

On April 21, Mark Scott, President of the University of Sydney, led a delegation to Fudan University. Fudan President Jin Li and Vice President Chen Zhimin attended the meeting, where the two sides held in-depth discussions on further deepening cooperation in talent cultivation, scientific research, and other areas.



During the meeting, President Scott shared his positive impressions from his visit to the Ministry of Education in Beijing the previous day. He noted that Minister Huai Jinpeng had expressed appreciation for the close interactions between the two universities, which further strengthened confidence in advancing bilateral cooperation. President Scott emphasized that the University of Sydney highly values its long-standing partnership with Fudan University. He also commended Fudan’s efforts in enhancing AI literacy, noting that there is great potential for the two universities to learn from each other in this field. He pointed out that the University of Sydney would officially launch its new China Centre in Shanghai later that evening, marking not only the university’s important commitment to Shanghai as an innovative city, but also a new platform for educational exchange and cooperation between the two universities, as well as between China and Australia. President Scott expressed his hope that the two universities would accelerate the development of joint education programs and further incorporate the humanities and social sciences into the cooperation framework to jointly address global challenges.


President Jin Li responded positively to President Scott’s vision for cooperation. He noted that over nearly three decades of partnership, the two universities have achieved fruitful outcomes in scientific research collaboration, cross-cultural exchange, and other fields. Last year, Fudan University celebrated its 120th anniversary and established six new innovation-driven schools to actively support the development of emerging technologies and the needs of regional industries. Fudan looks forward to deepening cooperation with the University of Sydney in talent cultivation and research innovation, and to jointly nurturing innovative talent with a global vision. President Jin also noted that Fudan is actively planning the establishment of an Institute for Sustainable Development. Given the University of Sydney’s strong expertise in areas related to the Sustainable Development Goals, the two universities have complementary strengths and broad prospects for cooperation in this field. He expressed his hope that the two sides would work together to contribute the strength of universities to addressing global challenges.


During the meeting, Chen Jie, Dean of the School of Biomedical Engineering and Technology Innovation; Chen Zhao, Associate Dean of the School of Data Science; and Huang Cheng, Assistant Dean of the School of Computing and Intelligence, delivered thematic presentations.


Joanne Wright, Vice President for Education and Student Affairs; Kirsten Andrews, Vice President for External Engagement; Shane Griffin, Associate Vice President for Future Students; and Darren Goodsir, General Secretary, also joined the visit from the University of Sydney. Tian Mei, Director of Fudan University’s Center for Advancing Global Collaboration; Xu Yefang, Deputy Director of the Center; Wang Ying, Deputy Director of the Office of Global Partnerships; and representatives from relevant departments and schools also attended the meeting.



The visit further consolidated the strategic mutual trust between the two universities and helped clarify priority areas for the next stage of cooperation. Both sides will accelerate communication and implementation, striving to achieve early breakthroughs in talent cultivation and interdisciplinary research collaboration.
